CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball scored all five of its runs during a three-inning stretch to open the Southland series against Stephen F. Austin with a 5-1 victory Friday evening at Chapman Field.
After a pair of scoreless frames from both sides, A&M-Corpus Christi took full advantage of two walks and wild pitches to put runners at the corners before an
Itchy Burts' sacrifice fly and
Josh Caraway double put the Islanders ahead 2-0 to kick start the run stretch.
SFA answered with its lone run in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Skylar Black walk and back-to-back Lumberjack singles that brought him home and halved the Islander advantage, 2-1. With runners at the corners, SFA looked to inflict further damage but a clutch strikeout from starter
Jaime Ramirez Jr. (6-2) worked the Islanders out of a two-out jam as he went on to secure his sixth victory of the season.
Homers highlighted the Islanders' fourth and gave the home club some breathing room as
Brendan Ryan and
Tristan Welch delivered back-to-back solo shots for a second-straight, two-run inning and the 4-1 lead.
The Islanders completed its scoring efforts in the fifth behind a Burts single that led to a pair of stolen bases to put him 90 feet away before Williams chased him home for the 5-1 score after lining out to left.
A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching staff limited the Lumberjacks to one run on five hits while fanning eight.
Nick Urbantke and
Leo Perez combined for 4.0 innings of scoreless relief to seal the Islanders' fifth-straight, series-opening victory.
Islanders and Lumberjacks resume the series tomorrow (May 8) at noon.
