Long Ball Powers Lamar Past Islanders

BEAUMONT, Texas – Aided by the long ball, Lamar withstood a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rally to claim a 7-3 decision in game three Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Solo home runs from Lamar's Chase Kemp and Anthony Quirion followed by a Kelby Weyler single added another run and staked the Cardinals to a 3-0 lead in the first.

The Islanders' rally spanned the fourth and fifth frames, as a two-out Leo Markotic single scored Tristan Welch and Brendan Ryan, who had reached on a hit by pitch and walk, and made it a one-run game.

A&M-Corpus Christi tied it 3-3 in the fifth, as Luke Marbach singled and Itchy Burts reached on an error that led to a Cardinal miscue on a steal attempt that allowed Marbach to score the unearned run.

Lamar broke the tie in the home half as Quirion belted his second homer of the afternoon that proved the go-ahead run and boosted the Cardinals back to a one-run, 4-3 lead.

From there, the Cardinals put up runs in the sixth and eighth to complete their scoring while the pitching duo of Max Mize and Jack Dallas tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless relief.

Cassius Shy (0-4) shouldered the loss for the Islanders, allowing three runs on seven hits through 4.1 frames.

Islanders and Cardinals decide the series tomorrow (May 2) at 1 p.m.
