Islanders Open Series with Doubleheader Sweep of Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas – John Gaddis posted another shutout performance in a 6-0 blanking while a five-frame scoring stretch in game two completed a come-from-behind 11-7 victory and sealed the Islanders' doubleheader sweep against Lamar Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Game 1 – A&M-Corpus Christi 6, Lamar 0

Islanders' starting hurler John Gaddis closed out the month of April with his fourth complete-game win and second series shutout in a 6-0 blanking of Lamar.

The Islanders' red-hot offense wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Luke Marbach connected on the opening pitch of the game for a left-field homer, his sixth on the season, that boosted the visiting club to a 1-0 lead on the first at bat. A&M-Corpus Christi padded the advantage thanks to three-consecutive singles from Josh Caraway, Brendan Ryan and Scott Hastings in the heart of the order to stake a 2-0 edge after one half.

A&M-Corpus Christi completed the remainder of its scoring in the sixth, as a hit by pitch and Ryan triple scored one before Tristan Welch brought Ryan home on a center-field single. Steven Rivera-Chijin punctuated the frame with his first career homer for the blue and green, sailing it over the right-field wall to make it a 6-0 ballgame.

Gaddis earned his fourth win of the season and fanned five batters through 7.0 innings.

Game 2 – A&M-Corpus Christi 11, Lamar 7

The Islanders erased a 5-2 deficit by scoring in five-straight frames, including a breakout four-run fifth, to complete the 11-7 rally victory and cap a doubleheader sweep.

Leo Perez (2-3) earned the victory after throwing 5.0 innings of relief that allowed only one run on two hits.

Lamar built its lead through the opening four innings, starting with a three-run first that included an Anthony Quiron homer, followed by three one-score home halves that withstood a pair of two-run Islander frames in the third and fourth as the Cardinals clung to a 5-4 edge heading to the fifth.

A&M-Corpus Christi went on to turn the tide in the top of the fifth as a leadoff walk and three-straight singles made way for a Caraway double that plated the tying and go-ahead runs, while a Mike Williams' groundout chased home the fourth tally for an 8-6 Islander lead.

Ryan got in on the long ball action with a two-run homer that put the finishing touches on the Islanders' scoring efforts in a game that saw five batters turn in multi-hit performances.
