NEW ORLEANS – The doubles point ultimately decided both matches as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program topped New Orleans 4-3, but the women fell to UNO 4-3 at the University Tennis Center.
Â
The men (14-4, 2-0 SLC) are the only unbeaten team left in the SLC standings. They took down UNO (5-4, 2-2 SLC) to remain at the top.
Â
The Islanders were winning in all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. At No. 1, freshmen
Pascal Lorieul and
Nathan Schwartz clinched it with a 7-5 victory after junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman
Ryuya Ata won at No. 2. A&M-Corpus Christi was up 5-4 at No. 3 with freshmen
Carlos Berna Ruiz and
Borja Delgado before it ended unfinished.
Â
In singles, the clinching match came at the No. 1 spot. Yamanaka battled back from a set-down to defeat Austin Vos 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.
Â
Lorieul remained undefeated on the year and is now a perfect 11-0 with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4. Delgado rounded it out with a straight-set 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
Â
The men improved to 10-0 all-time against UNO.
Â
The women (18-3, 8-2 SLC) were tasked with needing four singles wins after dropping the doubles point to UNO (11-2, 9-1 SLC); they nearly pulled it off.
Â
Freshman
Emma Aucagne cruised to her 11th consecutive victory with a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 4. Aucagne is now 17-1 in singles on the year.
Â
Two more straight-set wins came at No. 3 and No. 6. At the third position, freshman
Emma Honore got it down for a 6-4, 6-1 final. Delattre also shook off her opponent for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Â
However, a pair of three-set matches both ended in UNO's favor at No. 1 and 2 singles to claim the overall match. The women are now 7-2 all-time against the Privateers.
Â
Both teams will be in action again Sunday at Nicholls. The women will serve it up at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. men's match.
