AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas scratched out eight runs over the final two frames to pull away and hand Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 14-4 setback Tuesday night at UFCU Disch Falk Field.
A&M-Corpus Christi's senior squad of
Itchy Burts,
Luke Marbach and
Mike Williams paced the Islanders' offense, racking up a combined six of the total nine hits while Williams added two RBIs to his stat sheet.
The Islanders kept within striking distance through three innings, as senior duo Burts and Williams accounted for the first two runs in the first and third with Burts getting aboard via a single and double before Williams brought him home each time for his two RBIs of the game.
After a two-run long ball extended the home lead to four in the fifth, A&M-Corpus Christi freshman
Tyler Byrd answered in identical fashion with his first collegiate home run to bring it back within two, 6-4, to start the sixth.
That proved the closest the Islanders would get the rest of the way, as UT saved its best offensive production for the final two frames and busted the game open with eight runs on seven hits to build a 14-4 lead that held until the last out.
The Longhorns touched up nine Islander pitchers on the night, scattering 12 hits and benefiting from 11 walks.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Southland play with a four-game road series at Nicholls State beginning on Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m. with the doubleheader.
