Extra-Inning Comeback Highlights Islanders’ Doubleheader Sweep at Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball opened its four-game series against Southland foe Nicholls with a doubleheader sweep, using a big four-run tenth to deliver the 7-3 extra-inning thriller before riding a complete-game effort from John Gaddis to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap Friday at Ray E. Didier Field.

Game 1 – A&M-Corpus Christi 7, Nicholls 3

A leadoff walk and Tre Jones single sparked a decisive four-run tenth that saw A&M-Corpus Christi scatter four hits for four runs to send them past Nicholls in a 7-3 extra-inning thriller.

After Nicholls claimed a 3-1 edge heading to the sixth, a pair of key Islander walks led to a run before the lead was completely washed thanks to a Mike Williams' single that saw him later score and tie it 3-all on a Colonel error to send it to extras.

It took two extra innings for either offense to get going before A&M-Corpus Christi busted the game wide open using four well-placed singles and a couple Colonel pitching gifts to own a 7-3 lead – the largest margin of the game. The Jones single that scored Brendan Ryan proved the deciding run as the Islanders padded its lead while Nicholls failed to get any closer the rest of the way.

Jaime Ramirez (2-2) pitched a lights-out 2.0 innings of relief, retiring six of the eight batters he faced during the crucial extra-frame stretch to pick up the mound win.

Game 2 – A&M-Corpus Christi 5, Nicholls 1

Picking up where they left off in game one, A&M-Corpus Christi rode a complete-game effort from John Gaddis and scored in three-straight frames to finish off the series-opening sweep.

Gaddis (1-3) tossed 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and one Colonel run while dispatching eight batsmen via strikeouts.

The Islanders tallied four of their five runs in a three-inning stretch, with a two-run fourth proving to be their biggest offensive outburst as, once again, Ryan and Jones provided the spark that set up a Cole Fluta single that drove home Jones and Tyler Byrd to double the visitor's lead, 4-0.

After going 3-for-5 from the plate in game one, Williams saved his biggest hit for last as he launched a solo-shot rocket over the fence to complete the Islanders' scoring. The long ball is his third of the season.

The Islanders and Colonels continue the four-game set tomorrow (April 10) at 6:30 p.m.
