A&M-Corpus Christi Claims 2021 Women’s Tennis SLC Championship

BEAUMONT, Texas –
The fourth-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after sweeping the host and seventh-seeded Lamar 4-0 in the finals of the Southland Conference Championship on Monday at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
 
It marked the 28th SLC Championship and will be the 13th NCAA Tournament appearance for A&M-Corpus Christi tennis.
 
The clinching match for the women (22-4) came at No. 4 singles against Lamar (10-8) where SLC Freshman of the Year Emma Aucagne ousted Natalia Molina 6-4, 6-1.
 

The afternoon started with a win in doubles for the Islanders. Freshmen Leopoldine Boisseau and Victoire Delattre cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3, and fellow freshmen Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore clinched it on court two with a 6-2 result.
 
In singles, the Islanders won the first set on all six courts. The first match to end was No. 2 singles where sophomore Camille Townsend dominated early and then finished off Elena Rodriguez 6-0, 6-4.
 
On the court next to her, Honore won her second match of the day in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alba Perez at No. 3 singles. She finished just minutes before Aucagne who put the finishing touch on the day.
 
In unfinished matches, sophomore Mariya Shumeika, Boisseau and Delattre were all ahead. Shumeika won the first set 6-2 at No. 1. Boisseau and Delattre nearly finished on courts five and six, respectively, as Boisseau was up 6-3, 4-3 and Delattre 6-4, 3-2.
 
Head coach Steve Moore will make his 12th NCAA Tournament appearance, which is the most at a single institution in the history of the league for any sport.
 
Selections for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be announced at 5 p.m. on, Monday May 3. The first round will be played on either Friday, May 7 or Saturday, May 8.
