WACO, Texas –
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program put up a fight against eighth-ranked Baylor in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, but the Bears finished on top 4-0 at the Hurd Tennis Center.

"We could not be more proud of these amazing, high character women! Every time they got knocked down this year, they bounced right back with courage and character," said head coach Steve Moore. "Ever since we lost a heartbreaking match in New Orleans, this team choice the character road, stuck together like a unified family and competed like tigers for each other! They poured their heart and soul into this team all year. Winning the conference tournament without dropping a point and advancing to the NCAA Championships for the fourth time speaks for itself, but what makes me even more proud is the high character family this group became."

The highlight of the day came at No. 2 doubles where the Islanders (22-5) won 6-2 over the Bears (24-4). Freshmen Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore raced out to a red-hot start and led 4-0. They finished it off with Aucagne holding serve.

A&M-Corpus Christi had opportunities at No. 1 doubles as well. Five of the first seven games went to no-ad deuce points, but Baylor's No. 31 ranked team found itself in front 5-2. The Bears won the next game to grab the doubles point.

In singles, the Islanders again didn't go down easy. Aucagne, the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, dropped a tight first set 7-5 at No. 4 but was dominating 4-0 in the second and was a point away from making it 5-0.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Camille Townsend was serving for the second set ahead 5-4 when the match went unfinished. Fellow sophomore Mariya Shumeika was up 4-2 in the first set and in the midst of a back-and-forth second before the match went unfinished.

The Islanders, who did not have any seniors on the roster, swept three matches in the SLC Tournament to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Up next, the men's program will square off with second-ranked Baylor in the NCAA Tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday.
