CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi headed to the final home half down a run and the series hanging in the balance, but
Brendan Ryan made his third and final hit of the day count with a center-field single chasing home the winning tallies and securing the series in a 9-8, walk-off victory against Houston Baptist Sunday at Chapman Field.
With the dramatic finish, the red-hot Islanders won their third-straight Southland series and have proved victors in 10 of their last 12 league games.
The offensive powerhouse trio of
Luke Marbach,
Josh Caraway and Ryan combined for nine of the Islanders' 13 hits while Caraway and Ryan delivered seven RBIs. Caraway's 3-for-4 day at the plate consisted of a career-high three doubles.
After HBU seized the 8-7 edge on a double and passed ball in the seventh and then held the Islanders scoreless in the next two frames, a
Mike Williams single and Caraway two-bagger put both in scoring position on the first two at bats before Ryan ripped the deciding blow and signaled the walk-off celebration.
HBU snuck on the board with a run in the first, but the Islanders' offensive trio turned the deficit to a 3-1 home lead on Marbach and Ryan singles sandwiched between a Caraway extra-base hit.
Both teams rung up big-inning efforts as a Huskies' triple cleared the bases in a five-run third to retake a 6-3 lead before a four-run fourth narrowly put the home club back on top, 7-6.
JT Moeller (3-0) held the Huskies to a one-run lead on 2.0 innings of relief in the final frames to pick up his third mound victory.
