EDINBURG, Texas – After a
Brendan Ryan homer in the first handed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a two-run lead, UTRGV unleashed a 10-run barrage over the opening three innings to cruise to a 14-4 final in run-rule fashion Tuesday evening at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Ryan seemed to pick up where the Islanders left off in its series sweep of Central Arkansas, belting his first homer of the season over the left-field fence to bring a pair across the plate and put the visitors ahead 2-0.
From there, UTRGV took the reins as a leadoff single fueled a three-hit, four-run first that overturned a 2-0 Islander lead and put the home club in front, 4-2.
UTRGV's unrelenting offense continued through the next two frames, as a triple and sacrifice fly plated one in the second before a five-run explosion in the third busted the game wide open for a 10-3 margin heading the fourth.
The Islanders broke up a two-frame scoreless stretch in the sixth as
Tyler Byrd coaxed a walk and eventually scored via a wild pitch and Vaquero error.
A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching staff kept UTRGV off the board for four-straight innings, but the visitors sealed the run-rule victory the same way it began with its second four-spot inning in the eighth to claim the South Texas Showdown meeting.
Up next, the Islanders aim to claim its third-straight Southland series in a home set against Houston Baptist beginning Friday, April 23 at 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Chapman Field.
