Islanders Break Out Bats in Runaway Win Over HBU

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball posted four multi-run frames and compiled a season-high 13 runs on 16 hits as the Islanders cruised to the 13-6 series opening victory over Houston Baptist Friday night at Chapman Field.

Seven players recorded multi-hit performances, with Mike Williams leading the hit parade with a 3-for-6 day at the plate while Josh Caraway smashed a solo shot in the third that gave the Islanders the lead for good. Scott Hastings also enjoyed a solid day with a career-high two doubles on the night.

After being held scoreless in the first, the Islanders answered in dominant fashion by scoring 12 runs in the following five frames to turn in their sixth-straight Southland win.

HBU struck first on a hit by pitch and left-center double for the 1-0 lead, but back-to-back singles from Caraway and Brendan Ryan set the table for a Scott Hastings double that plated a pair and got the offense rolling as A&M-Corpus Christi gained the 3-1 lead.

The Huskies used a subsequent three-hit, two-run third to even the score 3-3, but it wouldn't last as Caraway blasted the solo shot for a 4-3 Islander lead that exploded to an 8-3 advantage in the fourth thanks to consecutive hits from the senior trio of Luke Marbach, Itchy Burts and Williams.

A&M-Corpus Christi's offensive onslaught continued, as Marbach drove home Hastings and Fluta on a left-side single in the fifth before the runners contributed in the batter's box with back-to-back doubles to set up another two-run inning and complete the 12-run stretch.

Rounding out the big scoring effort, the Islanders saw their fourth and fifth doubles courtesy of Burts and Williams to bring home another tally and surpass the previous season-high mark.

Jaime Ramirez Jr. (5-2) earned his fifth victory of the season with 5.1 innings of work that allowed two runs on four hits while fanning five.

Islanders and Huskies take the field tomorrow (April 24) for a Southland twin bill starting at noon.
