SAN ANTONIO – In its final tune-up match before the conference tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program was edged 4-3 by UTSA on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Â
The Islanders (19-4) nearly came back after dropping the doubles point, but UTSA (9-10) was able to win three singles courts to hang on in the end.
Â
"I give UTSA credit, they played very tough at home today. I think our girls have to make better choices and choose to control their tenacity and energy from the beginning of the match. We dug ourselves a hole at the beginning with lack of energy. But I give the girls credit, they showed character and fought back. We just have to make the full commitment to play every point with great footwork and intensity with no excuses," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Â
Freshman
Emma Aucagne won her 13th consecutive match to improve to 19-1 overall. She ousted UTSA's Catalina Cabrique 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 after going 10-0 in singles in conference.
Â
Improving to 17-2 on the year was freshman
Victoire Delattre. She took down Laura Munoz-Baroja 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.
Â
At the top of the lineup, sophomore
Mariya Shumeika gutted out a 7-6, 3-6, 10-5 win over Jasmin Starr. Shumeika is now 18-3 on the season.
Â
The Islanders and the Roadrunners split a pair of meetings this season after A&M-Corpus Christi won 4-0 at home on Jan. 29. The Islanders are 13-6 all-time against the Roadrunners.
Â
Up next, the fourth-seeded Islanders will face fifth-seeded Northwestern State at 2 p.m. Friday, April 23 in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
