CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After 12 innings which saw three ties and neither team lead by more than one run at any point,
Mike Williams provided Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with the thrilling heroics it needed with a three-run, walk-off homer to seal a 7-4 victory over Central Arkansas Friday night at Chapman Field.
Marking his third long ball in the last three games, Williams launched the decisive blast with two outs flashing on the board in the bottom of the 12
th to break up three scoreless frames and help the Islanders collect their second extra-inning win of the season.
Proving to be a back-and-forth affair from the beginning, UCA struck first with a two-spot in the opening half before the Islanders quickly answered in the home half thanks to a leadoff walk followed by a
Josh Caraway double and
Tristan Welch single that evened it 2-2 through one.
Both teams only managed one-run efforts in four different frames, as the Islanders wiped out two one-run UCA leads, with another leadoff Burts' walk and Caraway single set the table for a Welch groundout that turned a 4-3 UCA lead to a 4-4 tie that held until Williams' 12
th-inning homer.
Relievers
Cassius Shy and
Jaime Ramirez Jr. tossed 5.0 innings of scoreless ball through the final frames to help the Islanders lock up the series-opening victory, with Ramirez (3-2) picking up the mound win.
Islanders and Bears resume the four-game set tomorrow (April 17) with a 2 p.m. twin bill at Chapman Field.
