CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi unleashed its lethal pitching duo of
Hayden Thomas and
Henry Bird on Central Arkansas in game two, as the pair combined for eight scoreless frames and fanned nine en route to a 2-1-win Saturday night at Chapman Field.
Thomas (2-1) provided a masterful pitching performance for the Islanders, fanning five and scattering three hits through 7.0 innings that saw him retire 11-straight batters.
The scoreboard remained untouched until the third inning, as Steven Rivera notched the leadoff triple and advanced home the next at bat after a Bears' fielding error to put the home club ahead 1-0. Central Arkansas paid for the mistake, as
Luke Marbach and
Mike Williams ripped back-to-back singles to allow Burts to score the decisive unearned run.
Central Arkansas threatened in the seventh, putting two aboard via a single and walk with a B. Ayala sacrifice fly scoring the Bears' lone run. The Bears hoped to bring the tying run home as well, but an Islander double play squashed any comeback hopes.
From there, Bird took control and slung strikes as he mowed his way through the Bears' order, retiring the side in eight pitches. He rung up three more in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
After rain delayed the start of tonight's game, the Islanders and Bears conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow (April 18) at 11 a.m.
