LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore phenoms
Carissa Barnes and
Faith Panhans added Southwest All-Region Honorable Mention citations to their list of season accolades, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Tuesday.
Barnes and Panhans are both first-time selections, making it the first time A&M-Corpus Christi garnered two honorees in the same year.
Named Southland Libero of the Year and a three-time Southland Defensive Player of the Week winner this spring, Barnes topped the league in digs per set (5.88) and aces per set (0.61), which ranks eighth nationally in both categories, while finishing second in total digs. Barnes registered double-figure digs in all matches and posted nine 20+ dig efforts including a career-high 42 against Southeastern Louisiana. The sophomore has also been crucial on the serve, as her 40 service aces is good for a third-place national ranking.Â
Panhans adds the All-Region honor to her growing resume after claiming Southland Setter of the Year and marking the fifth time in six years the honor has gone to A&M-Corpus Christi. She led the Islanders in assists (664) and averaged 10.06 per set, along with being an offensive weapon that swung a .347 hitting percentage that ranks fourth in the league. Highlighting her spring campaign, Panhans registered a triple-double at UIW with 13 kills, 43 assists, and 11 digs and tallied a career-high 62 assists in the Southland championship match.
A&M-Corpus Christi faces San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament tomorrow (April 14) at 11 a.m. on ESPN3.
