THIBODAUX, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball matched a season-high 12 runs on 12 hits en route to a runaway 12-2 victory over Nicholls, earning the Islanders their first Southland series of the spring Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.
Every Islander in the lineup recorded a hit in the scoring barrage, as
Itchy Burts and
Cole Fluta enjoyed multi-hit performances.
It only took three batters for the Islanders to get on the board, as a Burts double sandwiched between a pair of Colonel errors drove two across and eventually stretched to a 3-0 lead after benefiting from a couple walks and hit by pitch.
The Islanders scored in the following two frames, as another leadoff error set the table for a
Josh Caraway single that made Nicholls pay and boosted it to a 5-0 ballgame through two innings. A sixth run scored in the third courtesy of back-to-back doubles from
Tristan Welch and
Scott Hastings.
A four-run eighth left no question about the outcome, as the Islanders benefited from an error and hit by pitch to load two aboard before the hit parade resumed with a Burts single and
Mike Williams three-run blast that blew the game wide open for an 11-2 Islander advantage.
The Islanders touched up eight Nicholls' pitchers, scattering 12 hits and drawing five walks along with three hit batsmen.
Pitching trio of
Dylan Johnson,
JT Moeller and Jaime Ramirez limited the Colonel's offense to two runs off six hits as Moeller (2-0) notched the win and Ramirez was awarded the save.
The Islanders begin a nine-game home stand with a South Texas Showdown matchup against UTRGV on Tuesday, April 13 slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch inside Chapman Field.
