THIBODAUX, La. – In a game where both sides combined for 17 scoreless innings, a Nicholls run in the home half of the third proved the difference as the Colonels narrowly edged Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1-0 in game three Saturday evening at Ray E. Didier Field.
Both squads produced stellar pitching efforts, as
Leo Perez provided 5.2 innings of shutdown relief for the Islanders as he retired 17 of the 22 batters he faced to keep the blue and green within striking distance until the final out.
However, Nicholls' Devin Desandro (2-1) dealt a masterful performance as he retired 19 and fanned four through his 7.2 innings of work to claim the emphatic mound victory.
With offense coming at premium, the only blemish on the night came in the bottom of the third as an Islander miscue put Baisel Williams at second where he stole third before being brought home on a Colonel groundout to plate the unearned run.
A&M-Corpus Christi put together its best scoring chance in the third, as
Leo Markotic and
Luke Marbach whacked back-to-back singles to place runners at the corners and the tying run 90 feet away before a third-out lineout squashed the threat. The Islanders also stranded two aboard in the fourth to account for four of their five left on base.
The Islanders and Colonels conclude the series tomorrow (April 11) with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
