Islanders Visit No. 2 Texas for Wednesday Matchup

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball concludes its non-conference schedule with a Wednesday (March 10) contest at No. 2 Texas set for a 4 p.m. first serve.

Islander Match Notes
  • The Islanders went 1-1 last week, dropping a tough 3-1 road decision at preseason poll runner-up Sam Houston before bouncing back for a dominant 3-0 sweep against Houston Baptist on senior day.
  • For the third time this season, Carissa Barnes earned Southland Defensive Player of the Week laurels after recording 18 digs at Sam Houston and 25 digs in the sweep over Houston Baptist. Her 25 digs against HBU stands as an Islander season-high for a three-set match. She has recorded eight 20+ dig performances this season and ranks second in Southland for aces per set (0.47).
  • Barnes compiled a career-best dig performance against Southeastern La., finishing the five-setter with an impressive 42 digs. The performance slashed her previous best of 31 digs against Northwestern State on October 3, 2019.
  • Faith Panhans joined an elite club of 14 players at the Division I level to record a triple double this season after the sophomore tallied 13 kills, 43 assists, and 11 digs in a career day at UIW.
  • Rachel Young leads the way for the Islander offense, totaling 126 kills and averaging 3.32 while Chloe Simon closely follows with 111 kills and touting a 2.92 average of her own.
  • Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 14.97 kills per set paces the league and ranks fourth overall nationally.
  • As a team, the Islanders top the Southland in several statistical categories including assists per set (13.32), hitting percentage (.277), and kills per set (14.97). Individually, Panhans (0.390) and Young (0.367) rank among the league's top four in hitting percentage ranking first and third, respectively.   
The Opponent
  • No. 2 Texas touts a spotless 18-0 mark entering the midweek meeting.
  • The Longhorns retain five players with 100+ kills on the season, led by Logan Eggleston's 293 kills.
  • On the defensive, Texas sports a similarly balanced roster as five players have posted 100+ digs through 18 games.
