BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M used a shutdown pitching effort along with two multi-run innings to blank Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball in a 7-0 decision Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park.
A two-out
Steven Rivera-Chijin single followed by back-to-back walks of
Tyler Byrd and
Nick Mueller in the second mounted the Islanders' best scoring threat with bases loaded, but the Aggies squashed the chance with a fielder's choice on the next batter to keep A&M-Corpus Christi off the board.
Texas A&M took advantage of a Bryce Blaum walk and subsequent stolen base as Ryan Targac whacked a left-field single to plate Blaum and ring in the Aggies first run of the night before starting Islander hurler
Cassius Shy eliminated any further damage with a flyout.
The Aggies went on the score in the next two frames, punctuated by a decisive three-run fourth that saw four hits and three players record an RBI to run up a 5-0 tally.
Luke Marbach and
Itchy Burts gave the Islanders' offense life in the eighth with back-to-back hits to put two aboard in scoring position with one out, but the Aggies caught the next two looking to retire the side and preserve their fourth shutout of the season.
Burts paced the Islanders with a 2-for-4 day while eight pitchers for the blue and green found time on the mound.
A&M-Corpus Christi opens Southland play with a four-game series at McNeese beginning Friday, March 12 at 6 p.m.
