LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese's potent pitching performance held Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball scoreless in seven frames while racking up 13 strikeouts as the Cowboys stampeded past the Islanders 4-2 to open league play Friday night at Joe Miller Park.
The Islanders' scoreboard remained untouched until the fifth as
Luke Marbach drew the hit by pitch to get aboard, using a subsequent
Itchy Burts flyout and
Josh Caraway single to cross home and make it a 3-1 ballgame.
McNeese sought relief from Brad Kincaid, who ended the Islanders' threat and went on to toss six strikeouts over the ensuing two frames before Will Dion used the final 2.0 innings to strikeout four batters and complete a shutdown effort.
Marbach came in clutch for the blue and green once again in the ninth, igniting one last push with a solo shot to left center to find home plate for his second time of the night and slice the deficit to 4-2.
Payton Harden kickstarted the Cowboys' offense with a single that evolved into a McNeese run thanks to a following groundout and pair of wild pitches.
Two Islander miscues and a Jake Dickerson double helped McNeese register a two-run fourth that stretched the home club's lead to three runs.
John Gaddis dropped the decision (0-1) for the Islanders, scattering three runs on two hits through 3.1 innings.
The Islanders and Cowboys resume the league-opening series tomorrow (March 13) at 2 p.m.
