CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 6-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday at the Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (12-1, 2-0 SLC) cruised to three doubles wins to earn the doubles point over the Lady Lions (3-6, 1-2 SLC). They followed it up with a trio of lopsided, straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match.
"I really feel the fitness and hard-work our girls committed to since September is paying dividends for them. I see them staying on balance for the long end of the point which is a big goal of ours. I think they're fighting incredibly hard and are growing mentally tough for every match. We're always trying to play every point with intensity and get rid of any loose stuff," said head coach
Steve Moore. "This was a battle today. Southeastern Louisiana has a very good team and No. 1 player. So you know a match like this can turn any minute. I have a lot of respect for Coach Jason Hayes, who has done so much extra work to help elevate Southland Conference tennis and help so many teams. We will keep working hard and getting more accountable with our process and trying to improve every day as a team."
Sophomore
Mariya Shumeika improved to 12-0 on the year at No. 2 singles after pummeling Polina Sleptsova 6-1, 6-1. Shumeika also won her doubles match 6-2 with reigning SLC Player of the Week winner
Camille Townsend.
Improving to 10-0 on the year in singles was freshman Victoire Dellatre with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6. She teamed with fellow freshman
Leopoldine Boisseau to pick-up a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Boisseau also won in singles 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5.
At No. 3 singles, freshman
Emma Honore breezed to a 6-2, 6-3 win. It was close to the same at No. 4 singles where freshman
Emma Aucagne won 6-0, 6-3. Honore and Aucagne partnered together for a 6-0 stomping at No. 2 doubles.
As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi is now 63-6 (.913) in singles and 31-3 (.912) in doubles this season. The Islanders carry a 50-9 SLC record over the past five years.
