HOUSTON, Texas – A big five-run third inning turned heads in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball's debut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, but No. 9 TCU stormed back and capped the 15-5 run-rule with an eight-run seventh to preserve its win streak Friday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
The Islanders scored all five of their runs in the third, with the offense coming alive with three-straight hits from Steven Rivera,
Diego Johnson, and finally a
Luke Marbach double that earned A&M-Corpus Christi its first run.
A TCU wild pitch and simultaneous error lent itself to helping clear the bases and swap leads 3-1 in favor of the Islanders, before a pair of walks and singles from
Mike Williams and
Tristan Welch finished up the five-run frame.
TCU flashed its offensive prowess in the home half, seeing a triple before Wolfe homered to left center to bring home a pair and make the first indent in the Islanders' 5-3 edge.
The Hornfrogs proved tough to stop, as they posted two runs for three-straight innings to overtake a 7-5 advantage from the Islanders before putting it on ice with a four-hit, eight-run seventh to enact the run rule after exploding to a 15-5 lead.
Marbach paced the Islanders with a 2-for-4 day, bringing home the first run in the third-inning barrage.
The Islanders got the early game for day two, as they take on Rice tomorrow (March 6) at 11 a.m.
All nine games of the tournament will be televised by AT&T SportsNet SW and streamed on Astros.com, MLB.com, the AT&T SportsNet app and the MLB app. AT&T SportsNet SW is available in the Astros five-state viewing area. Fans are asked to check local listings for more information.
