HOUSTON, Texas – For the second time in as many games, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball rung up an early advantage before Rice exploded for 13 unanswered runs on 16 hits to claim the 16-5 outcome in seven Saturday at Minute Maid Park.
Homers from
Mike Williams and
Justin Taylor in back-to-back innings highlighted game two at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, as Williams crushed his second long ball of the season to bring home two runs and put Rice on alert in the opening frame.
The Owls answered with their own two-run inning before Taylor added to the Islanders' home run count with a two-run shot to left that doubled A&M-Corpus Christi's advantage to 4-2 through thanks to another offensive showing. Taylor's homer signaled his first of the season as he finished 1-for-3 from the plate.
A&M-Corpus Christi held the Owls offense in check through the third, but Rice's bats came alive in the middle stretch for the first of two six-run innings that vaulted them to a 15-4 cushion by the end of the sixth inning.
The Islanders scratched out a final run in the seventh courtesy of a
Brendan Ryan triple followed by a single from
Scott Hastings that allowed Ryan to trot across the plate.
In the College Classic finale, the Islanders face No. 10 Texas Tech tomorrow (March 7) in the 11 a.m. morning slot at Minute Maid Park.
All nine games of the tournament will be televised by AT&T SportsNet SW and streamed on Astros.com, MLB.com, the AT&T SportsNet app and the MLB app. AT&T SportsNet SW is available in the Astros five-state viewing area. Fans are asked to check local listings for more information.
