CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball opens Southland Conference Tournament action hosting No. 5 Houston Baptist in the second round Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. inside Dugan Wellness Center. The winner of Thursday's match plays No. 1-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals on Friday, April 2 at 2:30 p.m.
No. 5 Houston Baptist advanced due to COVID-19 protocols being implemented within No. 8 Incarnate Word's program and a "no contest" was declared.
Islander Match Notes
- Four Islanders – Carissa Barnes, Faith Panhans, Chloe Simon and Rachel Young – were honored as All-Southland selections with Barnes and Panhans claiming two major awards with Libero and Setter of the Year, respectively, along with first-team laurels while Simon and Young landed on the second team.
- The Islanders finished the regular season with an 11-4 overall record and 9-3 conference mark to claim the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.
- In Southland tournament competition, the Islanders are 8-5 overall and hold a 1-1 record as the No. 4 seed.
- Taking home Southland Libero of the Year for the second superlative of her career, Barnes was a three-time Southland Defensive Player of the Week this spring, she topped the league in digs per set (5.82) and aces per set (0.70), which ranks eighth nationally in both categories, while finishing second in total digs. Barnes registered double-figure digs in all matches and posted eight 20+ dig efforts including a career-high 42 against Southeastern Louisiana. The sophomore has also been crucial on the serve, as her 33 service aces is good for a 12th-place national ranking.
- For the fifth time in six years, the Islanders were bestowed a Southland Setter of the Year distinction as sophomore Faith Panhans earned the conference nod. She led the Islanders in assists (532) and averaged 9.85 per set, along with being an offensive weapon that swung a .383 hitting percentage that topped the Southland. Highlighting her spring campaign, Panhans registered a triple-double at UIW with 13 kills, 43 assists, and 11 digs and finished the regular season with three double doubles.
- Chloe Simon's 819 career kills lands her ninth on the Islanders' all-time kills list, as she needs 41 to pass Shannon Hullum in the eighth spot.
- Rachel Young leads the way for the Islander offense, totaling 163 kills and averaging 3.02 with nine double-digit efforts while Chloe Simon closely follows with 161 kills and touting a 2.98 average alongside 10 double-figure games of her own.
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 14.70 kills per set paces the league and ranks fifth overall nationally.
- As a team, the Islanders top the Southland in several statistical categories including assists per set (13.11), hitting percentage (.291), and kills per set (14.70). Individually, Panhans (0.383), Young (0.364) and Hannah Froeschl (.357) all rank among the league's top four in hitting percentage at second, third and fourth.
The Opponent
- Houston Baptist tied the Islanders for most All-Southland selections with four, with citations going to Jada Allen, Mikayla Vivens, Ebonie Ballesteros and Ellie Wipf.
- The Huskies completed the regular season with a 9-9 overall ledger and 8-4 league mark.
- HBU averages 2.32 blocks per set to lead the league.
- In their last meeting, the Islanders swept HBU 3-0 at the Dugan as Young led with 13 kills while Simon chipped in a double-double effort with 12 kills and 12 digs.
