CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – UTSA scored in five-consecutive frames while yielding Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a meager three-hit day in a 10-1 decision to wrap up the non-conference series Sunday at Chapman Field.
The Roadrunners scored early and often, bunching seven runs into a three-inning stretch highlighted by a three-run third that saw back-to-back solo shots delivered by Griffin Paxton and Dylan Rock make it 4-0 before a Joshua Lamb sacrifice fly helped the final run of the inning cross home plate.
Paxton accounted for both UTSA runs in the fourth by way of his second long ball of the afternoon to extend the Roadrunners' advantage to 7-0. A run in the fifth and sixth frames completed the visitors five-inning scoring stretch while Simon Miller silenced the Islanders' bats in a one-hit outing on 5.0 innings of shutout work.
The Islanders broke through in the seventh, as
Nate White wore a hit by pitch and
Itchy Burts doubled with one out to set up a
Luke Marbach sacrifice fly that allowed White to trot home.
UTSA touched up six Islander pitchers on the afternoon, scattering 11 hits and benefiting from 10 walks.
In addition to Burts' double,
Brendan Ryan and
Tyler Byrd registered a single to complete the Islanders' hit trio.
The Islanders hit the road for a four-game league series at preseason darling Sam Houston State beginning Friday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Don Sanders Stadium.
