Islanders Fall in Series Opener at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston scored in five different innings and pounded out 16 hits en route to a 13-2, run-rule decision against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the series opener Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

Itchy Burts had himself a 2-for-2 day at the plate, extending his hit streak to four-consecutive games while Justin Taylor logged his first multi-hit effort on the season to account for four of the Islanders' seven hits on the night.

Luke Marbach and Burts hit back-to-back singles and Marbach advanced to third on a Bearkat throwing error before Josh Caraway's sacrifice fly drove home the first run of the game for a 1-0 Islander lead.

A three-run blast courtesy of Colton Cowser flipped the lead in the Bearkats' favor, a margin that grew to 4-1 by the end of the opening frame.

The Islanders halved the deficit in the second by way of a Taylor leadoff single that saw him eventually score after beating out a third-out caught stealing for the run.

Sam Houston went on to score in four of the next five innings, tallying 11 of its 13 runs prior to the fifth. The Bearkats' capped the multi-hit run parade with a five-run fourth that saw Cowser lift his second long ball of the contest.

Bearkat starting pitcher Tyler Davis went the distance in the complete-game effort, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk in his 7.0 innings.

Islanders and Bearkats return to the diamond tomorrow (March 27) for an afternoon doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
