CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held the UTSA bats in check for six scoreless frames, but the Roadrunners used a seventh and eighth inning attack to scratch out the 7-4 game-two decision Saturday at Chapman Field.
A&M-Corpus Christi struck first in the fifth, as singles from
Brendan Ryan and
Diego Johnson put runners at the corners that allowed a Steven Rivera groundout to bring Ryan home and seize the 1-0 edge.
Islander starting pitcher
Hayden Thomas struck out five and retired 11 batters through his 6.0 innings of work, but not before UTSA claimed the 3-1 lead off back-to-back singles from Lamb and Ochoa followed by a Thomas error to end his day on the mound.
John Gaddis worked around a no-out situation to limit the UTSA damage to a 4-1 margin in the seventh.
The Islanders battled back in the home half, drawing a pair of a walks sandwiched between Ryan's second single of the afternoon to quickly load the bases and force a UTSA pitching change.
Itchy Burts made the Roadrunners pay with a fielder's choice to score
Brandon Petkoff before
Luke Marbach hit a two-run double to erase the deficit and punctuate a 4-4 deadlock.
UTSA carried its offensive barrage to the eighth, as a Joshua Lamb single and one-out walk set the table for a Griffin Paxton double followed by a Dylan Rock single to tack on three runs to flash a 7-4 edge on the scoreboard in the late stages.
Daniel Garza shutdown the Islanders offense the rest of the way, retiring six-straight batters in the final two frames to pick up the win and seal the series win.
Marbach highlighted the Islander offense with a 3-for-5 day while Ryan also contributed a multi-hit outing.
The Islanders and Roadrunners partake in the non-conference series finale tomorrow (March 21) at 1 p.m.
