AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball opened its nine-game road swing with a 12-1 decision to 19
th-ranked Texas Tuesday evening at UFCU Disch Fallk Field.
Texas tallied four multi-run innings behind 15 hits, with six of the 12 coming in the opening two frames. The Longhorns nearly cycled through the starting lineup during the first in a four-run spot before A&M-Corpus Christi starting hurler Jaime Ramirez found his footing and put the final two away to stop the damage as Texas took a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Brandon Petkoff produced the Islanders' first hit of the night in the second, but the bats went cold after that as the Islanders would not see another until
Tyler Byrd's single in the eighth.
However, the Islanders found their way onto the scoreboard in the sixth by way of an
Itchy Burts leadoff walk, who went on to steal second, followed by a
Josh Caraway hit by pitch and
Mike Williams flyout to get Burts to third with one out.
Leo Markotic took advantage, laying down a fielder's choice that saw Burts score and break up the Longhorns' scoreless stretch.
While Texas posted 10 of their runs in the opening five frames, the Islanders pitching trio of
Nick Urbantke,
JT Moeller, and
Justin Lewis limited the Longhorns to two in the back half of the contest on 3.1 frames of work while scattering three hits.
The Longhorns potent offense touched up six Islander hurlers for 15 hits and four walks while four batters enjoyed multi-hit productions to lock up the decisive victory.
A&M-Corpus Christi readies for a three-game trip to the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic beginning with a Friday, March 5 meeting with TCU set for 3 p.m. first pitch at Minute Maid Park.
