CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball returns to Southland action in its penultimate regular-season weekend, kicking off with a stop at Nicholls on Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m. before heading east to face New Orleans Saturday, March 20 at noon.
Islander Match Notes
- A&M-Corpus Christi played No. 2 Texas tight in all three sets but came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 final to conclude their spring non-conference slate. Despite the loss, the Islanders finished 2-1 in non-league play with dominant wins over UTRGV (3-0) and UTSA (3-1) earlier this season.
- Carissa Barnes leads the Southland weekly awards with three Defensive Player of the Week citations this season. The Weatherford, Texas native has recorded eight 20+ dig performances this season and ranks second in conference for aces per set (0.47).
- Chloe Simon's 779 career kills lands her ninth on the Islanders' all-time kills list, as she needs 81 to pass Shannon Hullum in the eighth spot.
- Faith Panhans joined an elite club of 19 players at the Division I level to record a triple double this season after the sophomore tallied 13 kills, 43 assists, and 11 digs in a career day at UIW.
- Rachel Young leads the way for the Islander offense, totaling 131 kills and averaging 3.20 while Chloe Simon closely follows with 121 kills and touting a 2.95 average of her own.
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 14.78 kills per set paces the league and ranks seventh overall nationally.
- As a team, the Islanders top the Southland in several statistical categories including assists per set (13.15), hitting percentage (.275), and kills per set (14.78). Individually, Panhans (0.382) and Young (0.366) rank among the league's top four in hitting percentage at second and third, respectively.
The Opponent
- Nicholls looks to keep its momentum going after a 3-2 home rally against Lamar banked its first win of the season, as the Colonels enter Thursday's contest with a 1-8 overall record. Preseason all-conference honoree Emily Gauthreaux paces the team with 86 kills and averaging 2.53 a set.
- New Orleans has two Southland victories to its name, downing Lamar and Nicholls in the first weekend of conference action but have since endured a six-game skid and sunk to a 2-8 mark. Kai Williams (79) leads a trio of Privateers sporting 70+ kills, with Alexis Parrish (74) and Shelby Pullins (70) rounding out the top three.
