EDINBURG, Texas – The 2020-21 South Texas Showdown standings have been tied after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis won 7-0 and the women 6-1 over UTRGV on Tuesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, is presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. The standings this year are now tied after 10 events.
Men's tennis improved to 10-1 on the season and the women 9-1.
"To go on the road against a tough rival and find a way like we did, I give the team's a strong salute for their fight and heart. We dug holes but managed to fight our way out. We have to clean up the loose points and learn to be 100 percent committed to the process on every point. Championship teams don't give many gifts and we've got to learn to play every point with greater intensity, not four out of five. I believe we will because this team has outstanding motivation, character and leadership," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The men's match started off with a clutch doubles victory. It came down to the No. 2 position where freshmen
Pascal Lorieul and
Carlos Berna Ruiz pulled out a 6-4 win. The duo improved to 8-1 on the year.
The Islanders then won all six singles matches. It included a couple three-set tiebreakers as freshman
Ryuya Ata hung on at No. 1 singles 6-4, 3-6, 10-6, while Lorieul did the same at No. 3 singles 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
Berna Ruiz upped his singles record to 8-0 as he breezed to a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Freshman
Guillermo Castaneda improved to 7-1 on the year after cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
The women made quick work in doubles and grabbed wins on all three courts to earn the point. At the No. 1 spot, the sophomore duo of
Camille Townsend and
Mariya Shumeika improved to 9-1 on the year with a 6-3 win.
In singles, Shumeika stayed undefeated on the year after grinding out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 2. Freshman
Victoire Delattre also remained unbeaten with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
In the middle of the lineup, freshmen
Emma Honore,
Emma Aucagne and
Leopoldine Boisseau were all straight-set winners. Honore won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, Aucagne 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 and Boisseau 6-4, 7-6 (2) at No. 5.
The men are now 19-3 all-time against UTRGV and have won 13 in a row. The women are 27-3 all-time vs. the Vaqueros and have won six straight.
The Islanders will have the weekend off from competition after Friday's men's match at UL-Lafayette was postponed. The women will travel to UTSA for a 2 p.m. road match Tuesday.
