CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program won five quick points and then finished off a couple third set tiebreakers to complete the 7-0 sweep over UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown on Tuesday at the Henry Tennis Center.
The showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, is presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. A&M-Corpus Christi leads this year's standings 22.5-16.5 after wins from women's tennis and golf today.
The Islanders upped their season record to 10-1. They are 52-5 in singles and 26-3 in doubles as a team.
The match of the day came at No. 1 singles. After the Islanders already clinched the match, sophomore
Camille Townsend came back to outlast Isabelle Bahr in a 4-6, 6-2, 14-12 marathon third set tiebreaker.
Another hard-fought win came at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set, freshman
Victoire Delattre responded by winning a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 decision. Delattre improved to 8-0 on the year.
Also staying undefeated in singles this year was sophomore
Mariya Shumeika. She's now 10-0 after cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Women's tennis is now 28-3 all-time against UTRGV, including a 17-2 mark at home. A&M-Corpus Christi has won seven straight matches in the series.
