HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program saw its eight-match winning-streak to open the season come to an end Thursday as Rice finished on top 4-0 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Â
"For the last 15 years here, we have never evaluated our team by wins and losses. But rather on things they can control like how hard they fight. It's always about two things with Islanders Tennis: were we a unified, spirited family and did we compete like warriors? Every player – no exceptions, no excuses. Today, I was very, very proud of the team because they played a perennial top-25 team, on the road and fought like crazy on every court. Two matches were in a third set, I heard players yelling "go Islanders" and sound of crazy fast feet across six courts for three straight hours. I knew an hour into this match this this is a team with championship heart and character," Moore said.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi (8-1) battled and kept it close on several courts. In doubles, Rice (3-2) clinched the point after winning on No. 1 and 3, respectively, but the freshmen duo of
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore were tied 5-5 at the No. 2 spot when the match went unfinished.
Â
In singles, reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week winner
Mariya Shumeika was up a set at the No. 2 position when the match went unfinished. She won the first set 6-4 and has not dropped a set this season.
Â
Another close match was being played at No. 6 singles where freshman Victorie Delattre was mounting a comeback. She dropped the first set 6-1 but answered by winning the second 6-4. She remained undefeated on the year.
Â
At No. 1 singles, sophomore
Camille Townsend was down a set 4-6 but was keeping pace in an even second 4-4 before it went unfinished. She remained undefeated on the season.
Â
The women will have the weekend off before returning to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. on the road at UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. The men will be in action Saturday at Texas at 1 p.m.
