CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball continues its four-game home stand and begins Southland action with a battle against preseason darling Stephen F. Austin Thursday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. inside Dugan Wellness Center.
Islander Match Notes
- The Islanders began the 2021 spring season with a pristine 2-0 mark after wins against non-conference foes UTRGV and UTSA on its home court.
- After helping anchor an Islander defense that led to a pair of opening-weekend victories, Carissa Barnes earned Southland Defensive Player of the Week laurels; the first weekly honor of her career. The sophomore registered 43 digs, using a game-high 24 dig effort to shut down a UTSA comeback bid.
- On the offensive end, Rachel Young paced the Islanders in both matches, collecting a team-high 11 kills over UTRGV and tying Chloe Simon with 12 for another Islander-best performance.
- A&M-Corpus Christi enters the anticipated matchup holding its opponents to a .170 attack percentage while touting a .318 percentage of its own.
- Blocking provided another statistical advantage for the Islanders, collecting 2.57 per set compared to 0.86 from the visiting squads.
- A win over SFA would give the Islanders their best start since the 2015 season.
The Opponent
- SFA carries a 12-4 record into Thursday's contest after playing 10 contests in the fall and six this spring; amassing a 4-2 mark since Jan. 22.
- Freshman Ielan Bradley took home Southland Offensive Player of the Week accolades after totaling 20 kills and attacking at a .489 percentage in a two-game span to lift SFA to victories over Tarleton State and Louisiana Tech.
- The Ladyjacks, reigning regular season and tournament champions, amassed 16 first-place votes and 276 points to earn the Southland frontrunner title.
