Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis Coldcocks Northwestern State in Heavyweight Bout

NATCHITOCHES, La. – In a matchup between two programs that have combined for 12 Southland Conference titles since 2010, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program threw a haymaker to floor Northwestern State in a 7-0 final on Sunday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.

A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 11-1 overall and 1-0 SLC on the season.

"Northwestern State is one of the great programs in the history of our conference in women's tennis. They are universally respected and seen that way by every coach and player. To go into Natchitoches on the road, we knew we had to fight as hard and play as smart as we possibly could – and that's exactly what our girls did today! Their fight was a 10 and their spirit and determination was terrific because that's what it will take every time against this team," said head coach Steve Moore.

The Islanders earned the doubles point after winning the top two positions. The sophomore duo of Camille Townsend and Mariya Shumeika won 6-2 at No. 1, while freshmen Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore won 6-3 at No. 2.

Townsend and Shumeika improved to 11-1 on the year. Aucagne and Honore are now 9-1.

In singles, the Islanders won all six courts. At the top, Townsend grinded out a 6-3, 7-6 (4) straight set win. Shumeika cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 result at No. 2 singles to improve to 11-0 on the season.

Aucagne upped her singles record to 9-1 after breezing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Freshman Victoire Delattre remained undefeated at 9-0 on the year after submitting a 6-4, 6-3 result at No. 6.

The closest match of the day came at No. 5. Freshman Leopoldine Boisseau came back after dropping the third set to win 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 in a marathon third set tiebreaker. Boisseau is now 8-1 on the season.

As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi improved its record to 58-5 in singles and 28-3 in doubles.
