CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball used seven innings of scoreless ball and a combined 10 strikeouts to shut down Houston's offensive production as the Islanders prevailed in a close 3-2 contest Friday night at Whataburger Field.
The Islanders scored two of their three runs during a decisive third inning, as a hit batter and
Josh Caraway walk brought two runners onboard before an
Itchy Burts shot to right drove home the pair and handed the home club a 2-0 margin.
Starter
Leo Perez kept the Cougars at bay with five shutdown frames that saw him collect four strikeouts and only allow three hits in the big-time mound victory.
Houston's found life in the sixth, taking advantage of back-to-back walks and a fielder's choice to put runners in scoring position as Bielamowicz promptly smacked a single that brought a Cougar home and halved the Islander lead.
Burts made his 2-for-3 day at the plate count, as a leadoff bunt sparked an offensive push as
Tristan Welch followed it up with his own single to put two Islanders aboard with no outs.
Mike Williams batted into a fielder's choice to bring Burts home and add the crucial insurance run to put the Islanders ahead 3-1 heading to the final act.
Houston quickly placed a runner in scoring position and took advantage of an ensuing Islander miscue to trim it to a 3-2 margin, but closer
Cassius Shy got the easy popup to extinguish the threat and tally his second save of the season.
The Islanders and Cougars tango tomorrow (Feb. 27) in part two of the Kleberg College Classic with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
