CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Houston erupted for a back-breaking eight home runs against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the visiting club surged to a 14-1 victory to even the series Saturday night at Whataburger Field.
Coming off a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Islanders to open the series, Houston set the tone immediately with a leadoff long ball, its first of two in the opening inning that vaulted the Cougars to a 3-0 advantage.
Houston continued to flex its offensive muscle, as five different batters took part in the home run parade over the ensuing four innings to run up an unanswered 13-0 cushion heading to the sixth.
Back-to-back singles from
Leo Markotic and Steven Rivera sparked life for the Islanders, as
Justin Taylor ripped a two-bagger to put himself and Rivera in scoring position with one out. A subsequent sacrifice fly from
Scott Hastings allowed Rivera to trot home as the home club added its first run to the lopsided leaderboard.
Steven Rivera paced the Islander batters with a 2-for-3 night and recording the lone run in the eighth.
The Islanders and Cougars reconvene Sunday to decide the series winner in the Kleberg Bank College Classic finale at 1 p.m.
