Men’s Basketball Hangs Tough with Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame needed a hot shooting night to get past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program Wednesday in an 83-73 final at Purcell Pavilion.

A&M-Corpus Christi (10-3) led as late as the 11:26 mark of the second half, but Notre Dame (6-5) shot 16-of-29 (.552) from three-point range, including 8-of-10 (.800) in the second half.

The Islanders led in many statistical categories including points off turnovers (20-13), points in the paint (26-18), fast break points (7-4) and bench scoring (27-14).

Junior Trevian Tennyson tallied 18 points, including four three-pointers. Junior Isaac Mushila neared a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Off the bench, senior San Antonio Brinson and Terrion Murdix scored 12 points apiece. It was Brinson's first game back after missing the previous five.

The Irish only used six student-athletes. Dane Goodwin ended with a game-high 21 points and was 5-of-7 from three.

Mushila scored the first four points of the game to put the Islanders up 4-0 and they increased it to 12-5 after a lay-up by senior Simeon Fryer. A&M-Corpus Christi took its biggest lead of the game 19-10 with 11:36 left after a move in the post by junior Stephen Faramade.

Notre Dame responded with a 9-1 run to cut it to 20-19, but buckets by Murdix and Mushila kept the Islanders ahead 24-19 with 7:17 remaining. However, the Irish reeled off eight straight points to take a 30-26 edge and carried a 42-37 lead into the break.

The Islanders fell behind 54-46 when they rallied in the second. A lay-up by Murdix sparked a 7-0 run as they trailed just 54-53 with 13:14 to go after a lay-up by Brinson. A&M-Corpus Christi took the lead 58-57 on a three by Tennyson with 11:26 left.

The Fighting Irish answered with a 10-2 run to jump back ahead 67-60 at the 8:28 mark. A&M-Corpus Christi trimmed it down to 67-65 after a bucket by Mushila with 6:45 remaining, but Notre Dame went on an 8-0 spurt to go back up 75-65 at the 5:04 mark.

A&M-Corpus Christi will have nine days off from competition before returning home to play Sul Ross State on Friday, Dec. 31 at 12 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
