Men’s Basketball Cruises to 101-49 Win to Wrap-Up 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
The calendar year ended with a strong all-around effort from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program as it notched a wire-to-wire 101-49 win over Sul Ross State on Friday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (11-3) got it done on both ends of the court as it made a season-high 41 field goals and surrendered a season-low 49 points. The Islanders also pulled down a season-best 59 rebounds, which led to a +28 rebounding margin.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi got out in transition where it ourscored the Lobos (5-7) 38-4. The Islanders have not been outscored in fast breaks this season.
 
Three Islanders scored career-highs. It included sophomore Stephen Faramade with 20 points, senior Ethan White with 11 points and junior Donovan Ray with 11 points. All 11 student-athletes that checked in made at least one field goal, including freshman Jordan Roberts who netted 13 points. A&M-Corpus Christi scored a season-high 70 points off the bench.
 
On the boards, juniors Isaac Mushila and Terrion Murdix secured 10 rebounds apiece, while Faramade was one shy of a double-double with nine. Murdix recorded nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
 
Defensively, the Islanders limited Sul Ross to a .294 (20-68) shooting mark and .206 (7-34) from long range. Julian Paredes scored a team-high 15 points.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi scored the first seven points of the game as junior Trevian Tennyson started it off with a three-pointer. A lay-up by Mushila kept the team ahead 21-14 at the 8:21 mark. The Islanders ended the first half on a 10-2 run and led 39-23 after a fast break dunk by junior Jalen Jackson.
 
The Islanders broke it open early in the second half.  A fast break lay-up and three by Murdix increased the advantage to 56-28 with 15:54 remaining. A&M-Corpus Christi went on a 14-0 spurt to make it 72-32 after a jumper by Roberts with 12:32 left.
 
A hook shot by Faramade in the paint had the Islanders up 87-44 to go with 5:19 remaining. The largest lead was 52 points with 1:09 to go after another bucket by Faramade.
 
It was the first game in nine days for the Islanders who had the holidays off from competition. They'll now turn their attention to Southland Conference opponents with they play Northwestern State in the first round of the SLC Preseason Tipoff on Thursday at 5 p.m.
 
NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi's 11 wins are the most in school history prior to conference beginning. The Islanders joined a league in 2006-07 after previously competing as an independent.
 
- The Islanders have more-than doubled their win total from last year when they finished 5-19.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is now 3-0 all-time against Sul Ross. The last meeting was in 2001-02.
 
- The Islanders improved to 208-101 all-time at home and 6-0 this year.
 
- With Ray and White both reaching double-figures, the Islanders now have 13 student-athletes on the roster who have scored at least 10 points in a game. It's tied for the most in the nation with Bowling Green.
 
- Faramade's 20 points and nine rebounds topped his previous career-bests of 14 points and six rebounds against Southwestern University. He was 9-of-15 from the floor and reached double-figures in scoring for the third time this year.
 
- Roberts was two points shy of his career-high 15 against Southwestern. It was his third double-digit scoring performance as he was 4-of-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from three.
 
- Ray made just his second appearance of the year after playing in the final minute against Notre Dame. He made five field goals in 22 minutes.
 
- White surpassed his previous best of nine points against Southwestern. He was 4-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three.
 
- With a three-pointer on the first possession, Tennyson has still hit a three in every game this season.
 
- Murdix entered the game ranked second in the conference in both assists (3.9 apg) and assist:turnover ratio (1.9). He recorded seven assists and two turnovers in the game. His 10 rebounds doubled his previous career-high of five.
