CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
Winning five of the eight total flights, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs turned in impressive performances at the Islander Open to conclude the fall season over the weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The women won four of five flights between singles and doubles. Junior Mariya Shumeika won in both singles and doubles.

"What a great event for our city and university – high-level college teams competing with great intensity in front of the best tennis community in the nation. There were some really classy programs and classy coaches here this weekend," said head coach Steve Moore. "Our players really competed hard, learned a lot, and just poured their heart into supporting each other!"

In doubles, Shumeika and junior Camille Townsend won the A Flight. It was an all-Islanders finals as they topped sophomore teammates Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore 6-2 in the championship.

In the B Flight, sophomores Leopoldine Boisseau and Kateryna Rublevska took down a UTRGV duo 6-1 in the finals.

Shumeika took care of business in singles as well. In Flight B, she ousted opponents from UTEP, UTRGV and Lamar, including a lopsided 6-1, 6-3 win in the finals.

It was an all-Islanders finals again in Flight C singles. Sophomore Victoire Delattre pulled out a back-and-forth 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 nail-biter over Rublevska in the end.

On the men's side, senior Kyohei Yamanaka dominated the field in Flight B. He didn't drop a set in three matches and drubbed UT Arlington's Ricardo Alban in the finals 6-2, 6-0.

Another impressive outing came from junior Matthieu Peres. He won two matches in Flight A to reach the finals before falling to SMU's Caleb Chakravarthi 6-2, 6-3.

"Several players just competed with so much heart you can't help but praise them! I thought our captains Cami Townsend, Mariya Shumeika, Kyohei Yamanaka and Pascal Lorieul did a great job leading by example. And I think everyone left proud of how hard they competed and eager and excited to get better," Moore said. "We are very grateful to the wonderful supporters in this community who came out this weekend and very grateful to all the Islanders staff who work so hard."
