CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Staying undefeated on the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs registered a 4-1 win on the men's side over UL-Lafayette and 4-0 for the women over UTSA on Friday at the Henry Tennis Center.
Â
With the victories, head coach
Steve Moore is now just one win away from 500 in his career as he sits at 499. The 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner has coached the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments, 25 SLC Championships, 4 Top-40 National Rankings and 31 straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0.
Â
The men (7-0) kicked it off by grabbing the doubles point. The team of junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman
Ryuya Ata cruised to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. The Islanders clinched it at the No. 3 position with a 6-4 win from senior
Chad Nguyen and freshman
Nathan Schwartz.
Â
Nguyen and Schwartz are now 6-0 on the year as a team.
Â
In singles, SLC Player of the Week
Carlos Berna Ruiz improved to 6-0 on the year with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. A&M-Corpus Christi also picked up wins from Ata 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Schwartz 6-1, 7-5Â at No. 4.
Â
"These guys have worked so hard and really care so much - they're great, great, great kids. UL-Lafayette is our rival, they're a great team, always in the national rankings and really well coached. I feel we've earned the right to be confident. This group has been so hard-working and so disciplined the whole fall and over Christmas, and everyone keeps encouraging each other. They played really well today," Moore said.
Â
The women (5-0) also started strong by winning the doubles point. It started with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 slot from sophomores
Camille Townsend and
Mariya Shumeika. The clinching match came at No. 3 where freshmen
Victoire Delattre and
Leopoldine Boisseau pulled it out 7-5.
Â
It was an unbeaten day for both Shumeika and Delattre. Shumeika notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Delattre coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6. Freshman
Emma Aucagne tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles for the sweep.
Â
"I'm really proud. I'm proud of these young girls and proud of our captains for the way they've led. This team is rapidly improving and coming together. We have a lot of new players, but they all have good character and are committed to winning. FCA – family, character and accountability – really proud of this group," Moore said.
Â
The women's team is now 23-1 in singles and 13-1 in doubles on the year.
Â
The men improved to 11-8 all-time against ULL and 7-3 at home, while the women are 13-5 all-time against UTSA and 11-1 at home.
