A&M-Corpus Christi Sweeps Doubleheaders over Trinity in Home Openers

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs did not drop a point Sunday in their first appearances at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center as they swept a pair of doubleheaders 7-0 over Trinity.
 
With the wins, head coach Steve Moore is now just five wins away from reaching 500 in his career and sits and 495. The 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner has coached the team to 11 NCAA Tournaments, 25 SLC Championships, 4 Top-40 National Rankings and 31 straight semesters with a GPA above 3.0.
 
"This was a lot closer than the scores for sure - men's doubles points came down to a tiebreaker both times," Moore said. "Our team's been working really hard and I feel they've earned the right to be confident. They stuck with the process today, win or lose. The goal as a coach is to see any team play every point with intensity; we didn't quite achieve that goal, but I thought we were either at 8.5 or 9 out of 10. There's still some sloppy stuff that we need to clean-up and have a ton of work to do, but these are high-character, hungry and motivated kids and I can't wait to get back on the practice court."
 
Neither the men or women dropped a singles match as the teams improved to 4-0 on the season. The Islanders knocked off a Trinity men's squad that opened the season with a 4-3 win over Rice.
 
At No. 1 singles for the men, junior Kyohei Yamanaka posted a pair of straight-set wins. He teamed with freshman Ryuya Ata to register two wins at No. 1 doubles, including the clinching court in the second match.
 
Freshman Carlos Berna Ruiz improved his season record to 4-0 in singles with a pair of wins at the No. 5 spot.
 
On the women's side, sophomore Camille Townsend had nearly a flawless day at No. 1 singles. She won 6-3, 6-0 in the first match, and 6-0, 6-0 in the second.
 
Freshman Mariya Shumeika improved to 4-0 on the season and won a pair of straight-set matches at No. 2 singles. Townsend and Shumeika teamed together for two victories at No. 1 doubles.
 
The A&M-Corpus Christi men are now 8-0 all-time against Trinity, while the women are 5-2.
 
Up next, the men will host Howard Payne in a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 11 a.m., while the women will host UTSA at 2 p.m. Friday.
