Islanders Open Season with Doubleheader Victories over PVAMU

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A dominant start to the 2021 campaign featured a pair of 4-0 and 6-1 wins for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs over Prairie View A&M on Wednesday at the PVAMU Tennis Courts.
 
Head coach Steve Moore is now just nine wins away from 500 in his career as the 11-time SLC Coach of the Year winner upped his win total to 491.
 
"I thought this team came out with good energy and focus from the start. I love the character of this team and I know they worked very hard over the Christmas break. Their footwork and fitness looked good and it was obvious that they worked hard over the break. I'm really proud of them for that. We have a lot to improve and have to stay eye of the Tiger motivated every day. We have to keep making good choices to max out the things we can control. But I love the character of this young team and they are improved every day," Moore said.
 
On the men's side, freshman Carlos Berna Ruiz posted a 4-0 day as he went 2-0 in both singles and doubles. He teamed with fellow freshman Pascal Lorieul in doubles, and then notched the same score of 6-2, 6-2 in both of his singles matches at the No. 4 and 2 positions, respectively.
 
Also picking up singles wins on the day were senior Chad Nguyen and freshmen Guillermo Castaneda, Borja Delgado, Ernesto Mealla, Nathan Schwartz and Lorieul.
 
The women saw sophomore Mariya Shumeika go a perfect 4-0 on the day with a pair of singles and doubles wins. She beat PVAMU's Mahogani Green twice, with the scores 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0. Shumeika partnered with sophomore Camille Townsend for victors at No. 1 doubles.
 
The women went 6-0 in doubles overall. They also tallied singles wins from sophomore Jordan Ortega-Mendez and freshmen Emma Aucagne, Leopoldine Boisseau, Victorie Delattre, Emma Honore, and Kateryna Rublevska.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 56-0 all-time against PVAMU, including a 29-0 mark for the men and 27-0 for the women.
 
The Islanders will play their home openers Sunday when they host Trinity in doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. at the Henry Tennis Center
