Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team fell in two games on Saturday, first a 3-2 loss to Rutgers followed by a 2-1 loss to host South Florida on the second day of the USF tournament in Tampa, Fla.
- The Islanders move to 5-12 overall this season.
Game One vs. Rutgers
- The Islander offense got a jump start early on as
Tiare Lee singled to start the bottom of the 1st inning. Lee moved up to second after a passed ball and scored following a single from
Sydney Hoyt.
- Rutgers answered in the next half inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Entering the bottom of the 3rd, a double from
Ashleigh Sgambelluri put the Blue and Green right back in scoring position.
- Lee then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Sgambelluri over to third with only one out, followed by a RBI single from
Alexandria Torres back up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.
- Both teams remained scoreless for the next two innings before Rutgers scored on a solo home run over the left field fence to take a 3-2 lead, which would prove to be the final score.
- Lee, Torres, Hoyt,
Daisy Gonzalez and Sgambelluri all collected a hit a piece while both Lee and Sgambelluri scored a run.
- Senior pitcher
Kandace Johnson got the start in the circle against the Scarlet Knights, throwing five complete innings and giving up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.
Game Two vs. South Florida
- The final game of the day for the Blue and Green was a low scoring affair on both sides as the two squads combined for three runs.
- The Bulls got on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st, before an RBI triple from
Alyssa Miller brought
Haley Morse home in the top of the 4th.
- USF responded in the next half inning with a run to take a 2-1 lead on an RBI double.
- Sophomore
Jenika Lombrana pitched another complete game, throwing six innings and giving up only two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. She also retired 18 of 24 batters faced.
