Islanders improve to 3-0 in Southland with 72-59 win over Northwestern State

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball team opened the new year with a 72-59 victory over Northwestern State on Thursday afternoon in Natchitoches, La.
- With the win, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improves to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the Southland. The Lady Demons fall to 3-9 and 0-3 in conference play. 
- A&M-Corpus Christi opens Southland action 3-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season. 
- The Islanders have now won five straight games over the Lady Demons dating back to Jan. 7, 2017. 
- For the fifth time in the last six games, the starting five for the blue and green featured Alexes Bryant, Dae Dae Evans, Emma Young, Dalesia Booth and Tiara Matthews. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 4-1 with the five seniors on the floor dating back to Dec. 7. 
- Today's game featured five lead changes and three ties. 
- After scoring just 22 first half points, the Islander offense erupted for 50 points in the final two quarters, outscoring the Lady Demons, 25-17 in both the third and fourth frames.

Key Islander Statistics
- Bryant led the Islander offense with 17 points on five-of-10 from the field and six-of-eight from the charity stripe. It marks the seniors' seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season and the 29th of her career. 
- Booth collected 13 points with six rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Matthews added 11 points with eight rebounds, nearly earning a double-double. Arhianna Sims-Jackson also collected a block. 
- Freshman Alecia Westbrook continues to shine for the Islanders, as the Kansas City native recorded eight points and a new career high 10 rebounds off the bench.
- Emma Young added eight points while both Giana Wright and Torrionna Nesbitt collected four. 
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defense forced 17 turnovers on 10 steals, resulting in 19 points. Evans led the way with three and both Bryant and Hayle Campbell snagged two. 
- Evans also dished out a team leading four assists and added three rebounds. 
- As a unit, the Islanders out rebounded Northwestern State, 47-26 and are now in 8-2 when out rebounding their opponents. Their 16 offensive boards led to 18 second chance points. 
- All 10 Islanders that saw action against the Lady Demons recorded a point. 
- A&M-Corpus Christi closed out the game in the fourth quarter from the both the floor and the charity stripe, shooting nine-of-12 for 75-percent at the free throw line and eight-of-11 from the field for 72.73-percent. 
- Collectively, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi scored 42 of its 72 points inside the paint. 

Islander Notables
- Young continues to leave her name all over the Islander record books, as her one defensive rebound today moves her into sole possession for No. 5 all-time for defensive rebounds in a career with 382. She is also just 53 points shy of reaching 1,000 and can become just the 10th player in program history to reach the milestone. 
- Booth's two blocks today put her just two away from No. 3 all-time (113). Bryant added one block shot to put her one shy of  No. 7 all-time. In just two seasons on the Island, Bryant has recorded 84 career blocks.
