- Women make finals of every flight
The Contender CrossFit Islander Open was once again a great event with nine teams playing including Rice, UTSA, UTRGV, Lamar, Incarnate Word, Trinity, Laredo and the Islanders. We cannot thank David Harris and Contender CrossFit enough for bringing this great event to the Corpus Christi community! A special thank you to Jason's Deli and Pat O'Boyle for providing great healthy food for
players on every team.
The Islander women were strong making the finals of every flight, highlighted by
Camille Townsend and
Mariya Shumeika making the finals of the "A Flight". Both Islanders now carry a UTR of 10. They also teamed together to win the A Flight in doubles.
Islanders
Carolina Bulatovic and
Kei Kato battled each other in the Finals of B Flight in a thrilling match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Both girls worked incredibly hard this summer and are playing very high-level tennis.
Jordan Ortega-Mendez won her flight also and
Victoire Delattre made the finals before dropping a tough match to teammate Ortega. Bulatovic/Ortega-Mendez won their doubles flight also. Very impressed with the competitive spirit and team spirit these girls showed!
The Islander men were equally impressive with freshmen
Pascal Lorieul making the finals of the "A Flight".
Carlos Berna Ruiz battled hard losing in the third set tiebreak her of his flight and
Kyohei Yamanaka came back from injury to play extremely strong and win his last two matches!
Guillermo Castaneda,
Jonathan Christie,
Chad Nguyen also competed extremely hard for the Islanders. Freshmen doubles team of Casteneda/ Berna Ruiz also looked strong making the finals of their flight.
This was a great test for our team and a great privilege to play at home in front of the best tennis community in the nation! We are back to grinding, chopping wood, and out working people this week!
Thank you for your continued support of Islander Tennis!
Coach Moore
"Dedication, sacrifice and commitment to be the hardest worker is what got me these Davis Cup results. I learned to compete like a gladiator through good days and bad. All these values and lessons I learned from my 4 years as an Islander. Islanders fight always! Islanders Family Always!" ~ Peter Nagy
