BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following a one-week break, the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi track & field program leaps back into the fray as the team travels to the Southland Conference Championships, a two-day event scheduled for the days of Sunday, Feb. 24 and Monday, Feb. 25 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. In the Islanders last competition two weeks ago at the Texas Tech Shootout, the group composed one first-place finish (
Valentina Campos, personal record in the 3,000m) and one second-place finish (
Daniel Armstrong, 60m Hurdles) while setting nine personal records overall.
After notching her second first-place finish of the season and a personal best in the 3,000m, the Southland Conference named Campos as the league's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the first of her career.
Other notable performers included: Armstrong in the 200m (22.57s), a personal record for the freshman; fellow freshman
Matthew Lara's personal best in the mile run (4:38.46); senior
Marek Spriestersbach's sixth-place run in the 3,000m (8:47.97); junior
R'Darious Edwards' ninth-place leap in the triple jump (14.11m); freshmen
Devon Polk (9.07s) and
Shaylynn Wynn's (9.41s) pair of personal records in the 60m Hurdles; junior
Morgan McCutchen's personal best in the the 800m (2:23.81); freshman Kenndy Bontrager's personal record in the shot put (12.32m); and
Shaylynn Wynn's personal best in the 600y run (1:32.94).
Following the trek out to Birmingham, the Islanders take one last week off before sending any qualified athletes to the NCAA Indoor National Championships, a two-day affair set for Friday, Mar. 8 and Saturday, Mar. 9 in College Station, Texas.
