Pitching leads softball to Friday split at home

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi softball team split a pair of Friday games at Chapman Field on day one of the 2019 Islander Invitational.
- The Islanders fell in a close battle with Big 10 member Wisconsin, 3-2, in the first game and beat Texas Southern, 2-1, in the second game.
- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi pitching staff turned in a pair of complete game performances led by Kandace Johnson and Alexis Ruel.

Game One Key Statistics
- The Islanders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, scoring single runs in the second and third innings. Wisconsin got three runs in the fifth and held on for the 3-2 victory.
- Kandace Johnson threw a complete 7.0 game, allowing three unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts.
- Johnson also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base. She was also hit by a pitch.
- Sammi Thomas went 2-for-3 with a home run in the third inning down the left field line for her second big fly of the season.
- Emily Vela was 1-for-4 in the first game.

Game Two Key Statistics
- The Islanders scored single runs in the third and sixth innings to pull out the victory. The Tigers scored their lone run in the sixth.
- A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Southern each had four hits in the game. Two of the Islander hits were doubles.
- Ruel turned in the Blue and Green's second straight strong pitching performance, throwing a complete game, allowing one run on four hits. She struck out three and issued just two walks.
- Whitney Wendel went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a double.
- Thomas picked up a double and scored a run, going 1-for-3 in the second game. She scored the go-ahead run on Wendel's double.
- Keagan Helson reached on a two-out walk in the third and came around to score on an error for the game's first run.
- In the sixth with Texas Southern threatening, Ruel got a double play to end the inning. With one down and runners on second and third, the Tigers flew out to Helson in right. A run crossed the plate but Helson gunned down the runner trying to advance to third on the tag for a double play, ending the threat.
