Women's basketball opens Southland play with win over Nicholls

Story Headlines
- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi women's basketball team opened Southland Conference play with a 55-49 win over Nicholls State University Wednesday night inside the Dugan Wellness Center. 
- With the win, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi moves to 7-3 on the year and 1-0 in conference action. The Colonels fall to 3-7 and 0-1 in the Southland. 
- A&M-Corpus Christi takes a 10-9 lead in the all-time series against Nicholls, including a 7-2 mark on the Island. 
- Tonight's starting five included; Alexes Bryant, Dae Dae Evans, Emma Young, Dalesia Booth and Tiara Matthews

Key Islander Statistics
- The trio of Young, Bryant and Matthews all reached double-digit scoring, recording 14, 12 and 10 points respectively. 
- Both Bryant and Young nearly collected their 10th double doubles of their career, as they each pulled down a game high nine rebounds. 
- The defense for the Islanders forced 18 turnovers on 12 steals, which resulted in 16 points. 
- Freshman Alecia Westbrook secured a new career high four blocks. She also added six points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes of action. Bryant followed with two blocks while Booth collected one. 
- Young led the way from the charity stripe, going four-of-four from the line, followed by Booth who went four-of-five.
- Matthews, Evans and Torrionna Nesbitt all dished out two assists. Evans and Young also added three steals. 
- A&M-Corpus Christi continues to excel on the glass, as they won the battle of the boards yet again with 46 rebounds compared to the Colonels 33. They also scored 36 of their points inside the paint. 
- The Islanders grabbed 17 offense rebounds which resulted in 20 second chance points. 
- Texas A&M University Corpus Christi led for 33:47 of the game and by as much as 13 points in the third period. 

Islander Notables
- With 14 points in tonight's win, Young moves to the No. 10 slot on the all-time scoring list with 920 career points. She also jumps three spots to No. 6 all-time with 558 career rebounds and cracks the top 10 in steals with 119. 
- Tonight marks the fourth consecutive game in which at least three players for the blue and green have reached double digit scoring. 
- Evans played in her 100th career game tonight, joining Young (101) and Booth (102) in this year's senior class to reach the century mark. The trio also all hold a spot in the top 10 for career steals as Evans sits at No. 5 with 143, Booth at No. 6 with 132 and Young at No. 10 with 119.
- The Islanders remain a perfect 5-0 at home this season. 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is now 6-1 when holding their opponents to 50-59 points and 6-2 when outrebounding the opposition.
