Volleyball heads to UCA and SFA

CONWAY, Ark. - The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi volleyball team hits the road for a pair of Southland Conference matches this week. The Islanders will face Central Arkansas on Thursday, Sept. 27, followed by a match against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, Sept. 29. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is currently 2-0 in Southland play and is tied for first place with three other teams.

- The Bears ended the Islanders season in the second round of the Southland Tournament back on Nov. 18, 2017. The five-set thriller saw UCA jump out to an early 2-0 lead but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi battled back and forced a deciding fifth set. Chloe Simon had a team-best 13 kills and Madison Green added 19 digs in the effort.  
- In the first matchup of the 2017 season between UCA and the Islanders, it was a five-set back and forth match that saw the Bears win, 3-2, in Conway, Ark., on Oct. 5. A&M-Corpus Christi hit .327 for the match and each team had 72 kills. Green had 14 kills and 10 digs in the effort.
- UCA features reigning Southland Player of the Year Samantha Anderson who is averaging 3.47 kills, 0.43 blocks and 0.33 digs per set this season while hitting .314.
- SFA knocked off the Islanders, 3-2, last season at the Dugan Wellness Center. Green had a match-high 21 kills and added 13 kills.
- The Ladyjacks are off to a strong start this year, defeating Memphis, St. Johns, Rice, Wichita State, North Texas and Mississippi State in non-conference play.
- Rachel Young ranks sixth in the conference in attacking percentage at .315.
- Green moved into sixth in service aces per set in the Southland at 0.35 per set, tied for the second highest total.
- Green recorded the conference's first triple-double of the year, notching 33 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills in a five-set loss to South Florida on Aug. 31 at LSU. Only two other Southland players have a triple-double this season.
- In two conference matches so far, the Islanders rank first in the Southland at 13.83 assists per set, 3.33 service aces per set and rank second at 14.67 kills per set.
- Green has been named to the Mizzou, South Carolina and Islander All-Invitational teams this season. Sam Dumity earned All-Islander Invitational accolades as well.
- The Islanders added two junior college transfers in Eloise van Velthooven (Parkland College) and Kayla Valigura (Blinn College).
- New assistant coach Alexis Crimes was an alternate for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She played collegiately at Long Beach State.
- Green, Young, Chloe Simon and Krenek each played for the beach volleyball team in the spring of 2018.
- This is the 19th season of Islander Volleyball. The program began back in 2000.
