South Texas Showdown begins Tuesday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas. - The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi volleyball team will host UTRGV on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Dugan Wellness Center at 6:30 p.m. This will be the first installment of the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Credit Union. Fans will get a free rivalry t-shirt as part of the event.

- This will be the 41st all time meeting between the Islanders and UTRGV.
- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi holds a 23-17 advantage in the all time series.
- The two teams started playing back in 2000, the first year of existence for the Islanders.
- The programs did not meet in 2006 or in 2008.
- UTRGV went 2-1 at the Houston Baptist Classic over the weekend, sweeping both Louisiana Tech and Prairie View A&M, 3-0.
- The host Huskies won the final match, 3-1.
- This will be the first contest of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union of the season.
- The annual rivalry contest between the two schools involves a point system for head to head and other contest victories.
- The Islanders are in search of the year's first victory after falling in three matches at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C., over the  weekend.
- Madison Green was selected to the Gamecock Invitational All-Tournament team for her performance. She hit .255 with 22 2.44 kils per set and averaged 2.22 digs per set while notching four service aces.
- The Islanders were picked third in the 2018 Southland Conference Preseason Poll and Green was selected to the Southland Preseason All-Conference First Team.
- Green was an honorable mention in 2017 as a sophomore.
- Rachel Young was granted a medical redshirt after being injured in the fourth-match of the 2017 season. She will be a freshman this year.
- The Islanders added two junior college transfers in Eloise van Velthooven (Parkland College) and Kayla Valigura (Blinn College).
- The roster features seven true freshmen.
- New assistant coach Alexis Crimes was an alternate for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
- Green, Young, Simon and Jenna Krenek each played for the beach volleyball team in the spring of 2018.
- This is the 19th season of Islander Volleyball. The program began back in 2000.
- The roster features 10 players from Texas. Other states/countries represented include Indiana, California, New York, New Zealand and Isreal.

The Islanders hit the road for the LSU Tournament this weekend. Friday begins against the host Tigers at 12:30 p.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. contest against South Florida. On Saturday, the tournament concludes against Duke at 11 a.m. The Islanders will return home for a double header on Friday, Sept. 7, against Texas Southern and Miami.
